Keratin is a fibrous protein that is common throughout nature. Hooves, claws, nails and horns are all made with keratin, as are the beaks of birds.
Despite being the ideal material to build beaks out of, keratin is a living material and therefore is continually growing, which could be a problem if there is no mechanism to keep this growth in check.
Ospreys bring all sorts of objects to the nest to use as a manicure set by gnawing away at these materials - stones, slates, cow pats (no, really!) and of course, bark.
