The intruder eagle flew quickly after Anna. Anna turned midair to "go talons up" and engage with the intruder. It looks like the intruder female's talons may have just barely brushed Anna. Her speed/momentum helped to spin Anna back upright. Anna was too close to the trees and tumbled in the branches and the brush below. So, while I'm not happy about the intruder attempting to engage one of our eagles, I do have to thank her so that Anna could be in a place where they could get their hands on her...after a little chase.
Iebrucējs ērglis ātri aizlidoja pēc Annas. Anna pagriezās gaisā, lai "paceltos uz augšu" un sadarbotos ar iebrucēju. Šķiet, ka iebrucējas mātītes nagi, iespējams, tik tikko nosita Annu. Viņas ātrums/impulss palīdzēja Annu pagriezt vertikāli. Anna bija pārāk tuvu kokiem un iekrita zaros un krūmājā. Tāpēc, lai gan es neesmu priecīgs par to, ka iebrucējs mēģina saķert kādu no mūsu ērgļiem, man ir jāpateicas viņai, lai Anna varētu atrasties vietā, kur viņi varētu viņu dabūt rokās... pēc nelielas vajāšanas.

This is not the post we had hoped to make today. We are saddened and heartbroken to inform everyone that Anna died yesterday on January 1. Anna began to present symptoms of nasal discharge, diarrhea, and slight tremors while at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital. She even had a seizure, indicating she was having serious neurological distress. Before she could suffer worse symptoms, the vet euthanized her. The results of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) test will tell us definitely if Anna had the disease, although everything does present as if she did. If she did not have HPAI, her body has been frozen and a necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause. As soon as we receive the results from the test run on Anna, we will let you all know. Why did Anna have to be euthanized so quickly rather than wait 48 to 72 hours for the test results? 1) Anna was suffering, and 2) LSU does not have a bio-secure area to hold sick animals. Since Anna appeared to have HPAI, if they kept her and it was confirmed she had the disease, they would have to euthanize every bird in their facility - including three eagles undergoing rehabilitation, a Cooper's Hawk, and many other raptors and various other birds. Avian Flu is a serious, deadly disease of all birds that is of grave concern. Many have asked how they can contribute to the conservation and care of eagles. The USDA Forest Service does not endorse or encourage donations or contributions to specific organizations, but does want to share that there is a way to donate to the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital. This wildlife hospital is the only facility able to receive eagles in Louisiana. We learned from our interaction with the veterinary doctors that they operate the wildlife hospital on a modest budget and help make ends meet through donations. We have received word from the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine's Wildlife Hospital that the results from Anna (E-1 Female) were inconclusive as to whether Anna had Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Upon learning this, the veterinarian went to retrieve Anna's body from the freezer to run a second test and learned that Anna's body had been incinerated. This news is very disappointing to us all as we really wanted to know what had made Anna ill. Based on clinical science and the symptoms she presented on New Year's Day, the veterinarian did say he believes Anna was infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI.) Another female eagle from nest E-3, Andria, died earlier in December and we are still waiting on her necropsy results. We have called the facility in Georgia where she was sent and they do not have any results yet. These tests take weeks to perform and we were told once they reach a determination, Andria will be sent to another USDA facility for confirmation of the diagnosis, so this may take months before we receive any results. >sigh<
We understand your frustration and disappointment, as we feel the same way. We have lost two beautiful mama eagles that we have all come to love and have no definitive answers as to what killed them.
We will keep you posted when we do hear back about Andria's results. Meanwhile, in the next weeks, we will learn all we can about HPAI (how long does it linger, how is it spread, why some succumb and others do not, is there anything we can do to stop the spread, etc.) We will also continue to watch the happenings at E-1 and E-3. Looks like the new pair at E-3 may decide to move in permanently.
