I was trying to explain this morning about the mouth depth in relation to the eye regarding the gender of the eagle. These two photos show what I was talking about. In the first photo, we have DNF. Her mouth goes back to the back of her eye if you use a vertical line.
The second photo is Mr. North. His mouth goes about halfway to his eye if you use a vertical line from the end of his mouth up to his eye. Although this isn’t a hard and fast rule, it is one way that sometimes works to tell the male from the female. It is true on many of the nests that I watch.
With the two side view photos, you can find other ways to tell them apart, too! 02/26/21
