"FLEDGE WATCH" -Spirit's First Flight


What does it mean to fledge? To leave the nest tree for the first time & fly! Spirit will be 70 days old on 5/12/22 & she has been working on strengthening her muscles by flapping her wings, hopping, jumping & soon will also hover above the nest. She has been grabbing more with her talons to practice carrying prey & sticks, as well as branching (hopping from branch to branch). This is all in preparation for her first flight away from the nest.
The first few flights might be awkward & short, typically to a nearby tree. Until Spirit reaches the lake, we will rely on the two cameras & microphones for any information on her whereabouts.
Eaglets typically fledge between 10-14 weeks (70-98 days). Simba (Jackie & Shadow's eaglet) fledged at 100 days. One or both parents will likely be close by to witness the fledge. They will then locate Spirit & help her with flight skills which could take 4-12 weeks. She will learn to scavenge & hunt by following the parents around or watching other birds. To master hunting could take up to a year. These skills are learned by trial & error but guided by the predatory instinct. She could follow the parents back to the nest to sleep or may sleep in one of many nearby roost trees.
Spirit will most likely disperse by the fall to embark on her journey away from her natal area. Eagles are nomadic until they reach maturity at age 4-5 & could potentially travel thousands of miles away. Southern California fledglings can be spotted anywhere between Canada & Baja.
It is uncertain if the parents would recognize their offspring if they were to return since the young eagle would experience several molts & changes over 4-5 years. We do know that all eagles are considered & treated as intruders, especially if there are new eggs or chicks in the nest at the time.
If by chance Spirit were to "fludge" (accidentally fall from the nest), the parents could locate her by her vocals, remain with her & feed her. However, after 70 days, eaglets generally have enough feathers to be able to glide or fly down & land safely in branches or trees below the nest. Stormy (Jackie & Mr B's eaglet) who fludged at 74 days, ended up about 20 feet below & returned to the nest in nine days with the help of the parents.
The habitat is currently closed to the public by the Forest Service to avoid disturbing the eagles & protect Spirit until she leaves the nest area for good. We hope everyone will continue to respect this forest service closure order. As Spirit masters flight, she may venture out near the lake or public areas which could take several days/weeks. She may be spotted by local photographers & it is our hope that they will share their legally obtained photos in the FB group.
Our goal is to share accurate information about the Big Bear eagles & we hope you are enjoying this group as we all watch & learn together. We may experience different emotions as we see Spirit fly for the first time. It will be a bittersweet moment but we all want Spirit to be successful & thrive.
