M15 Gets Huge Rabbit Home! Harriet Secures The Area & Returns To Cheer M On 12-07-20
Even though it was cool and wet after the overnight rains, M15 got right to work securing the area and bringing more sticks and grasses. Harriet left for a short time to secure their territory also. When M15 flew west, I suspected he may be going for prey for Harriet, as he often brings food from the west. And what a breakfast M15 brought... a huge roadkill rabbit that he struggled to get to the nest as Harriet cheered him on. I first sighted him on the ground by the fallen strangler fig, then he flew to the ground again by the pond oak. Once airborne, M got some height, landing in the cam 2 tree. He then went to a front snag giving him more height and momentum but as he passed around the nest, he needed to stop once more to get the prey readjusted and ate some to lighten the load. *An eagle can carry around 30% of its body weight – 3-4 lbs, but depending on circumstances, they have been known lift more.* M15 flew again landing under the nest as H peered over the edge and cheered him on. Once airborne again, M flew around the pasture and nest tree, getting the height needed to enter the nest. Harriet quickly claimed the prey and ate while M brought more nest material.
