A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms known as a mesoscale convective system. Derechos can cause hurricane-force winds, tornadoes, heavy rains, and flash floods.
This afternoon that storm brought winds that sheared the limbs supporting the TRIO NEST taking both the nest and the public cam down. That lonely limb left standing holds our research cam. We are grateful that the nest was finished for the season. We have been blessed to witness the Trio. They will build a new nest and we Stewards will continue to monitor their activity.
While this news came as a gut punch reality is the Eagles are flying free and no humans are injured. Our prayers tonight are for the many households that suffered the damages from DERECHO!

High winds took down the nest and the camera I think. There may be one research camera left. Hoping the trio rebuilds where cameras are accessible. I don't think this area is all that easy to get to.

Thanks to super observer Gary Sterk who saw all three members of the Trio engaged in nest building activity. Always trust the Eagles and NO, the tree is not wired for the 2021 season.

Wade and I got another chance to make a trip to Lock and Dam 13 to check out the Trio (new) Nest. When we first saw them, there were only two in the nest. Wade got out of the car to take some photos and hope that the third would come back with some nesting materials and he was not disappointed. I think it was V2 that came flying over our heads with talons full of lotus leaves and flew to the nest. The sun was right behind them so the photo isn't wonderful, but at least you can see all three of them. Aren't they just the best?!
