6:54 Agri no rīta atlido Rita pasedēt tuvāk pie R2

7:42 R1 apciemo māsiņu ligzdā

Es redzēju, ka putnu ēda R1, meitiņai īsti nav apetītes, diezgan lēnīga R1, gan jau atžirgs, bet mani vērojumi vakar beidzās ar pēdējo bildi.

So today was quite the day! Last night, we realized that eaglet R2 was entangled in monofilament line that had made its way into the nest (probably attached to a fish the parents brought in for food). This was preventing her from being able to fledge and had the potential of causing serious injury or even death. It was decided that emergency intervention was necessary to free R2 from the monofilament and remove the excess from the nest so that other members of the family would not get entangled. Thanks to Lloyd Brown and the amazing MDFR team at Platform 34, we all collaborated to bring the only platform truck that could reach the nest to the site this morning and I was privileged to accompany Lloyd and Lt. Craig Thornton to the nest where our presence caused R2 to fly with great strength to avoid us and fortunately, the strength of her flight broke the line! It was her first flight from the nest and it was beautiful! This is a video of the highlights. Special thanks to my wife, Rita Magill, for capturing much of this video! When you watch the part where R2 flies from the nest, you will be able to see how she drags the line attached to her across the nest beofre it snaps. We were then able to remove all of the remaining monofilament one from the nest.
For all you who love to fish, please make sure that you properly contain and dispose of monofilament line properly as it can be deadly to native wildlife.
Thanks to today's effort, both of Ron & Rita's eaglets have officially fledged. We beleive that this is the first time that this pair has been able to successfully fledge two eaglets. Major reasons for this are the vigilant observations of Audubon Eagle Watch volunteer Jeanne Kaufman and the efforts put forth by Lloyd Brown of Wildlife Rescue of Dade County. It has been an honor and a privilege to support these efforts through the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment.
Once these birds have left for the season, we will be returning to fortify the nest and install microphones so that next year when Ron & Rita hopefully return to nest again, people will not only be able to see wonderful images, they will also be able to hear the vocalizations of these amazing raptors!
A wonderful update to the bald eaglet rescue yesterday of R2. It turns out that though she was able to break the line that had tethered her to the nest, there was still a significant amount of monofilament line wrapped around her foot. She was located late last night in the backyard of a house near the nest and Lloyd Brown was able to capture her with a net. He safely removed all of the line and fortunately, there was no serious injury. She was monitored overnight and then it was decided that the best thing to do would be to try to place her back in the nest this morning. We again contacted the amazing firefighters at MDFR Platform 34 and asked them to bring their special truck to the nest sight. The challenge was how to get R2 back into the nest without her panicking and flying right back out stressed and disoriented. We wanted her to settle in the nest and hopefully, one or both of the parents would return to help her settle down.
After collectng some feathers for DNA testing, Lloyd gently held R2 as firefighter Adam Stone maneuvered the the bucket of the truck to bring us to the nest with me along as a backup for Lloyd.
As we reached the nest, Lloyd gently placed R2 in the center bowl where she flapped her wings a couple of times and then calmly stood looking at us as we quickly descended. Thankfully, she remained in the nest and shortly after we reached the ground and packed up our gear, "Rita," returned to the nest to be alongside of R2 (it is a myth that birds will reject their offspring if they are touched by a human)! At last check, R2 remains calm in the nest with Ron, Rita and R1 perched nearby.
R1 and R2 have already beaten the odds as bald eagles are successful fledging chicks only about 50% of the time. Having said that, they still have many challenges ahead as they learn to be independent and find territories and mates of their own. This is a wonderful story that is still being written. All of us who have been involved are profoundly thankful to everyone not just in South Florida, but around the world, who have been so supportive of our efforts to connect you to these amazing birds. We pray for the best for R1 and R2 and look forward to Ron and Rita returning next year to hopefully produce another generation of these majestic raptors.
Enough cannot be said about the skills and dedication of Lloyd Brown and Wildlife Rescue of Dade County. These eaglets owe their lives to him. I am so proud to support his efforts through the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment. Special thanks to my son, Sean Magill, for his assistance in capturing the images that are part of this video.
