Ground Observations: Sunday, September 20, 2015
*** The official name of FV is now M15. So I have changed the name beginning today. *** *** It was a very different day at the nest with Ozzie, Harriet and M15 teaching us about their lives. May we all watch and not judge their lives. ***
6:00-6:30 I am at the perch spot of last night. I see two eagles on separate branches in the tree. No vocals. It looks like
Harriet top branch and Ozzie lower far right branch.
6:39 Harriet vocalizes and then Ozzie. Harriet vocalizes again shortly after and again at 6:42.
6:42 Both vocalize louder and louder and
I hear M15 too, not too far away. Ozzie and Harriet vocalize again. M15 flies in from the east to the opposite side of the tree. More vocals. M15 flies away and back, flying right toward Harriet and Ozzie. I hear wings flapping and vocals.
M15 is out of the tree with Ozzie chasing him. M15 goes to a power pole and Ozzie heads to the nest. Harriet remains in the tree.
6:49-6:51 Harriet hops down a branch and then flies from the tree to a different set of power poles, vocalizing. M15 flies where Harriet is and tries to land on or next to Harriet. She flaps her wings and vocalizes. M15 flies by her again and then to the top of a nearby Norfolk pine tree. Harriet is vocalizing almost all the time and calling a warning call.
6:50 I am told Ozzie is at the nest tree, vocalizing. Think he was vocalizing back to Harriet? I do.
6:50-7:00 Harriet vocalizes three times. M15 flies south to another tree from the Norfolk pine. Harriet is quiet.
7:02-7:15 M15 flies to a power pole next to Harriet. She vocalized as he approached. They are both vocalizing. Harriet vocalizes with her head thrown back a couple of times.
7:15
M15 flies away in the direction of the nest. Harriet follows him.
7:20 I am at the nest. Harriet is perched in a high branch above the nest. She is preening, vocalizing and tracking.
7:28 Harriet flies quickly to the NW and out of sight.
7:33 M15 flies into the nest tree from the northwest. He is panting and has his wings out from his body but looks fine. He leaves a minute later as he sees Ozzie heading toward the nest.
Ozzie is chasing M15 as they head to the southeast.
9:00
M15 flies into the nest tree from the NW again, vocalizes and leaves quickly to the SW.
9:02-9:08 I see an eagle on the cell tower but cannot identify it.
9:40
M15 flies back in to the nest tree from the west
9:58 Harriet flies in from the south with a stick to the nest. M15 drops down to the nest. Harriet is vocalizing and looking SW. She flies away with the stick to the SW. M15 follows her.
10:05 The eagle on the cell tower flies away.
10:25-11:00 There are several eagles soaring in the south and southwestern sky at different times.
11:00 I am headed home.
No eagles have returned to the nest tree or pastures. Ozzie, you have returned strong! May each day forward teach us more about eagles.
