Tā kā šajā ligzdā starp vecāko un mazāko ērglēnu attiecības ir saspringtas, cilvēki jautā, vai tā ir parasta lieta šo ērgļu ligzdās. Te ir atbilde:

Lyn Levin Yes, this it is very normal to have a pecking order among eagles. The oldest & strongest is usually fed first to ensure at least one eaglet will survive. The smaller one learns quickly that if they are patient & wait it out, their turn for feeding will come. It's difficult to watch, but that is nature's way & the parents very seldom will intervene between the eaglets. Both parents provide food & share in the feeding, building the nest, protecting, etc. Last season the little one (Honor) was constantly bonked by the older (Hope) & we were worried about them also, but Honor learned his lessons well & was the first to branch & fledge & became a majestic eagle. Hope this helps.

A. The older bird is larger, heavier, and more developed than the younger bird, so it requires more food and is avid for its share. Siblings will thus compete for food and parental attention, with one bird attempting to out-compete or dominate the other. The younger bird soon learns to keep a low profile until the older has been satisfied and quickly learns to use its wits, making grabs for food or doing 'end runs' around the larger bird. This behaviour occurs more within the first two weeks of life, declining as the siblings learn. Siblicide (one eaglet killing or causing the starvation of another) appears to be rare in bald eagles.

...for those who are wondering about self feeding...
Q. Is the smaller eaglet able to get enough to eat?
A. The smaller eaglet normally gets enough to eat over the course of the day.

Q. How does the eaglet learn to feed itself?
A. The eaglet learns by watching the parents prepare and pull off pieces of food; when the eaglet's ability to move about improves, it will begin to pick up small pieces of food that have been dropped and gradually will try to pull off pieces of food.

Mazie šodien ir 35/33 dienas veci.

Ozzija un Herrietas ligzdā situācija uzlabojas. E3 (vecākais bērns) nu vairs nav tik agresīvs pret mazo E4, barības ir vairāk un arī ērglēni kļūst lielāki un apzinīgāki, esmu novērojusi, ka abi mazie izrāda interesi viens par otru.
Šīs ligzdas foruma moderatori sniedz interesantu zinātnisku informāciju par putnu attīstību, piemēram, par to, ka putniem mēles pamatnē ir caurums, nebiju dzirdējusi...

Can an eagle choke on their food?
It is possible for an eagle to choke on its food - especially young eaglets who are anxious to get most of the food from their siblings. Usually they can bring the prey back up if it is too large. To help the eagle breathe while consuming prey they have an opening to their trachea in their tongue (in the back of their throats). When their throat is crammed full of a big fish, they can extend their tongues and still breathe. .. Picture shows his reverse barbs as well as the hole in his tongue. Eagles use this hole to breath, they also have nasal holes that also help them breath while eating.....they use the reverse barbs to help pull down the food at back of their throat...The ridges or arrow-shaped structures on the tongue aid in keeping the food moving backward toward the esophagus.
When it comes to young hatchlings the adults feed them the tenderest, choicest portions of the meat. They usually offer them very small portions. Sometimes they may offer a piece that is a bit too large and they will realize it and eat it themselves - then pull off another piece and offer that to the hatchling.

10.50 Situācija šajā ligzdā kļuvusi mierīgāka, mazuļi abi tiek baroti, vecākais vairs nav agresīvs, tomēr mazais ievēro piesardzību. Mazais ir pieņēmies un ir gandrīz tikpat liels kā vecākais. Nupat Ozzijs uzsāka barošanu ar E4 - mazāko, tad sāka barot vecāko E3. Bet abiem guzas ir pilnas...

Šajā - Ozzija un Herrietas ligzdā šogad ne īpaši labi veicas. Likās jau, ka viss normalizējas, bet ... Šonakt ir nomiris vecākais mazulis E3 , dažas dienas slikti ēda.

It is with heavy hearts, we bring you an update on E3- this season’s elder eaglet:
After a few days of a noticeable behavior change, E3’s health deteriorated and passed away in the nest early this morning.
While we may never know what caused the death of E3, we hope the documented videos and reports will help educate biologists and researchers & possibly save future eagles/eaglets.
We all mourn together with the reminder that we are merely observers; given the rare and unique opportunity to witness these eagles in the wild. Soar high and free E3.

I have watched since egg laying. The joy these eaglets brought while looking back at us with their mask colored eyes and their clumsy wobbling is always a wonderful sight to see as new life is brought to us and we are able to have the pleasure to be a part of watching them grow. We watched with tears and prayers as they went through the nail biting sibling rivalry stage. As they grew and finally started the cuddling stage. But to see one of God's creatures struggling for life knowing there is something wrong, we could only keep them in our prayers and hope for the best. It was also heartbreaking to see this with our precious Bogey and Birdie last year. E4 seemed to take care of his/her older sister and cuddled to the end. Thank you and big (((HUGS))) to the mods and everyone who takes care to keep us up to date and informed and all the great pics and videos at this site. Your kind words help us to try and understand and bring comfort to us . You are very much appreciated. We look forward to watching E4 growing and cuddling and getting his/her flight wings to get ready for fledge. He/she will bring us joy again. I just feel from her caring cuddles she knew something was wrong and made an effort to try and help her big sister. Soar High and Free in God's Heavens E3. My eyes are full of tears this morning and my heart is heavy. I feel some peace that precious E3 is no longer suffering. The last 2 days have been hard for her and us. I'm glad I can come here with people who truly understand how I'm feeling and what I feel for this eagle family. They were my 1st last year and always had a special place in my heart. I can't improve on the perfect words and thoughts of Eagle's Nana. It's a fitting and heartfelt tribute. Thank you Eagle's Nana. I do want to extend my, from the heart, thank you to those who kept a vigil last night. I know it was hard for you. You did a great job documenting what was happening. It breaks my heart to see Ozzie sitting by precious E3. He is such a nurturer, yet he must know something is wrong. I too like the idea that Mom Norfolk is waiting at Rainbow Bridge for E3 and all the other precious e's that leave us to soon. My thoughts stay with E4, Ozzie and Harriet and hope they all continue to prosper. I thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for all your great reporting, comments, s'craps and videos. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Godspeed E3. May you always be strong and safe and fly high on your eagle wings. Know that you were loved by many, most especially by sweet E4. The fog was heavy and so are our hearts this morning as we gathered at the nest to grieve for E 3. Ozzie and Harriet flew to the cam 2 tree. They had adult time then sat side by side for awhile. All was very quiet as every single one of us cried and hugged each other and watched Two Majestic Birds as they- in my opinion grieved.
I want to Thank every one for all the support you have shown this family.JudyB, Irisheye's Debs ,Mia,Cats, and so many others. Thank You All !

Spirit of Strength
In the quiet and peaceful early morning hours sweet E3 passed on to soar to greater heights. Little sibling E4 was there to comfort and help send E3 on her way. Some native cultures believe the Eagle carries prayers to the Creator. Many cultures have spiritual connections to Eagles believing they represent strength, knowledge, faith, courage, vision and freedom to mention a few. There are centuries old legends connecting man and eagles. We have learned many lessons by observing them. Although E3 was on the earth short time we were privileged to witness her tenacity and bravery. E3, soar proud and strong to the Great Spirit. Summary by dadsjazz
